How to | DIY Color Mist Masks

Hey y'all! How's your summer going? We still have a lot of rain but at some point in a day the sun always comes through which really inspires me to play more often with bright colors, glitter and shiny things. Speaking of bright colors, how about some neon action today? Along with a little tutorial, perhaps? Sure, here you go :) I posted the picture below on Instagram last week and thought I'd give a quick explanation on how to make your own spray mist mask with the Silhouette Cameo.

My idea came together when I was going through my stash and found a box of regular HP overhead transparency sheets. I originally bought them for printing my own overlays but really they work great for custom masks, too. After you have your transparency sheets placed on the cutting mat, what you want to do is find a digital file which you think looks cool as a mask. This can be anything from a cool pattern to a welded sentiment. I was feeling particularly fancy that day and designed my own pattern in Indesign, if you like it you can download the file for your personal use. Once you've imported it into the Silhouette Studio software, decide on the right size for your project and sent it to the machine to cut.

You can see in the screenshot above, I have a custom setting for overhead transparencies saved in my copy of the software. The settings are

  • speed: 3
  • thickness: 33
  • blade depth: 3

Once you've cut your design, you can use it like any other spray mask. The transparency sheets are probably thinner than what you are used to buy and may tear after some time if it's a very intricate cut. The good thing: you can just cut another one and vary the size if you desire.

Now here is a card I made with my custom spray mask in the background featuring the Limited Edition Neon Mini Mister Huey's (I used Trapper Keeper and My Little Pony).

That's it from me today! Leave me a comment if you have questions, I'll make sure to reply as soon as I can. I'll be one busy bee over the next few days since my Studio Calico July kit is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, along with a fun and trendy stamp set from Maile's new stamp class "Inked". La la love it and can't wait to play with this. See you soon!
